Cerebral autoregulation
Definition: The process by which a largely constant blood flow in the brain is maintained irrespective of posture and systemic blood pressure. It includes mechanisms related to muscular, neural or metabolic activity, which influence small arteries and arteriole diameter.. These mechanisms allow the brain to receive a steady supply of arterial blood, which transports oxygen, nutrients and other substances (e.g. hormones) that are necessary for physiological brain function.
