Fast Optical Signal

Definition: Fast optical signal (FOS) (also known as Event-related optical signal (EROS) for the time-locked to particular events) is the signal measured on a time scale ~100ms and it is thought to be related to scattering changes due to neuronal activity: when neurons pass from an inactive state to a hyperpolarized or depolarised state, they cause a change in the scattering of the tissue. FOS are more closely related to neuronal activity than the hemodynamic response.
