Functional hyperemia

Definition: Functional hyperemia is an increase in blood flow in response to neural metabolic activity. In the brain, this mechanism ensures sufficient supply of oxygen and nutrients to active regions during periods of heightened neural activity. It is crucial for normal physiological brain function and is disrupted in pathological processes, including neurological (e.g. stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases) and metabolic (e.g. diabetes) diseases.
