Negative BOLD response

Definition: Relative temporal decrease in BOLD contrast (stemming from increases in proportion of deoxygenated hemoglobin) in specific areas of the brain. Converging evidence indicates that the negative BOLD response can be interpreted as a decrease in neuronal activity below baseline (e.g. rest) levels. However, it is possible that it originates from a different neurovascular coupling mechanism compared to a positive BOLD response.
