Oxygen extraction fraction

Definition: The Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) is the fraction of oxygen that is extracted from the blood by the brain tissue as it passes through the brain’s circulatory system. OEF can thus be viewed as a proxy measure for efficiency of oxygen use for a respective tissue. In the context of neuroscience, OEF is a hemodynamic marker for brain ischemia and is thus relevant to brain diseases such as ischemic stroke.
