Systemic physiology augmented functional near-infrared spectroscopy

Definition: Systemic physiology augmented functional near-infrared spectroscopy (SPA-NIRS) is a method that uses fNIRS data in combination with the measurement of systemic physiological activity (e.g., cardiorespiratory and autonomic activity) to (i) improve the physiological interpretation of fNIRS measurements, (ii) use the systemic physiological signals to regress them out from fNIRS data, and to (iii) gain novel insights into the complex interplay of the brain with the physiological state of the entire body.
